How It Works
For the standard 5-year naturalization path, you must have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months (913 days) during the 5-year statutory period. Additionally, no single trip abroad should exceed 6 months (180 days), or it may break your continuous residence.
The Formula
Days in US = 1,826 (5 years) - Total Days Abroad
Months in US = Days in US / 30.44
Meets Requirement = Months in US >= 30
Months in US = Days in US / 30.44
Meets Requirement = Months in US >= 30
Variables
- Total Days Abroad — Sum of all days spent outside the US in the 5-year period
- Longest Trip — Trips over 180 days may break continuous residence
- 30 Months — The minimum physical presence threshold
Example
Someone who spent 200 total days abroad over 5 years has 1,626 days in the US (about 53 months) — well above the 30-month requirement with a 23-month margin.
Tips
- Keep a detailed travel log with entry/exit dates for every trip.
- Trips over 6 months may break continuous residence and reset the clock.
- Trips over 1 year almost certainly break continuous residence.
- Short weekend trips to Canada/Mexico still count as days abroad.
- You can use passport stamps, flight records, or I-94 records as evidence.
