How It Works
Consular processing is the alternative to Adjustment of Status for people applying from outside the US. After USCIS approves your petition, it goes to the National Visa Center (NVC), then to a US embassy or consulate for your immigrant visa interview.
The Formula
Total Time = NVC Processing + Embassy Wait + Document Delays + Medical/Admin
Variables
- NVC — National Visa Center review and document collection phase
- Embassy — Wait time for interview scheduling at the consular post
- Documents — Time to gather civil documents, translations, and police certificates
Example
An employment-based immigrant visa through a medium-volume embassy with documents ready: 8 months NVC + 4 months embassy + 0.5 admin = about 12.5 months total.
Tips
- Submit DS-260 and civil documents to NVC as soon as possible.
- High-volume posts like Mumbai and Manila can have 6-12 month interview backlogs.
- Get your medical exam done close to the interview date (results valid 6 months).
- Pay the immigrant visa fee and affidavit of support fee promptly to NVC.
- After visa issuance, you must enter the US before the visa expiration date.
